A special shoutout to Billy and Sam for winning A Fleet and winning 5 of the 7 races! Our women’s team competed at Wisco Women’s in Madison, Wisconsin. Congrats to Emily and Abigail for winning a race in A Fleet! The last regatta this weekend was competed at Navy for the Coed Atlantic Coast Tournament. This was a competitive fleet against some very strong east coast teams. Sherman and Lily had a very strong first two races and were winning B fleet after the first set! Summary
Our women’s team headed to MIT to compete at the second women’s showcase event of the season. Saturday started off with a strong, shifty, southerly breeze. These conditions proved to have many good opportunities to get ahead by connecting puffs and staying in phase. Our A Fleet started off strong with two bullets in the first two sets. Throughout the day, the wind got a little stronger and puffier. Many teams capsized. Race committee got 10 races off for each division in the strong wind. Sunday saw slightly lighter conditions and wind from the Northwest. The regatta finished with 6 more races in very puffy conditions. B Fleet was able to learn from the conditions and put together some top 10 finishes. The team finished 11th overall. Thank you to our recent alumni Connor Goulet for coaching the team this weekend!

Summary
The team traveled to Brown University to compete at the first Coed Showcase event. Saturday started off with a shifty easterly wind which proved challenging for the fleet. The wind was puffy ranging between 5-13 knots. The unpredictable wind, strong current, and competitive fleet proved for tough, competitive racing. There were a total of 10 races completed in each fleet the first day. The regatta saw similar breeze on Sunday and completed the regatta for a total of 18 races. B Fleet’s crew Lily Allen described the weekend as “challenging yet great opportunity to learn and improve on tactics against some of the best college teams.” The team ended on a positive note with a top 5 finish in A Fleet. Michigan sailors learned a lot and are looking forward to the next regatta!

The breeze on Saturday was a consistent 5-9 knot southerly allowing for many quality races. The team started off slow but quickly improved their finishes after the first set. The wind shut off just after A fleet finished their 10th race of the day. Sunday’s breeze was much lighter and more inconsistent. The day started off with a postponement on shore. Eventually the breeze evened out enough to get a few more races off for a total of 13 races in each division. Our team had a great showing finishing 5th out of 16 in A division! Overall, the team finished 12th. This was a great start to our women’s regattas this season!

It was great to host the 9 teams to our club on Baseline Lake! The regatta started off on Saturday in postponement as the sailors waited for the wind to fill in. The wind eventually filled in enough to race and race committee was able to get a few races off in both fleets. Unfortunately the wind on Sunday was not better, but race committee was able to finish off the set for a total of 3 races in each division. The light and shifty conditions were a tough test for the team, but offered many learning opportunities. The event was many of our sailors’ first college regatta and was a great chance for them to gain experience. Our A fleet sailors had a strong performance finishing 2nd and 3rd in their division. Overall, our team 2 finished 3rd and team 1 finished 7th. Thank you to everyone you came and we look forward to hosting again next year!

Summary
The Wolverine team traveled to Chicago to compete at Columbia Yacht Club. The teams sailed J 105s which no Michigan sailors had experience in, so it was a great test of the team’s quick learning and communication skills. The wind was very strong and led to very exciting racing. Michigan won 3 of the 8 races due to quick upwind boat speed and being able to pass boats with well executed boat handling. Congratulations to our Wolverine Sailors for a great regatta and a great win!

Men’s sailor: Billy Vogel (‘25)
Summary
Luci and Billy traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for the qualifiers for Singlehanded Nationals. Saturday had a solid medium East breeze and both fleets got off 4 races. The second day had much lighter breeze from the South. The racing was very competitive and a lot of the finishes came down to a difference of inches. Unfortunately, both Luci and Billy ended up on the wrong side of tie breakers. Luci lost a tie for 1st and Billy lost a tie for 2nd. It was a great experience for our young sailors and they both have a promising future competing at this event!

SUMMARY
Michigan sailors competed at Kennedy Cup at the Naval Academy in the academy’s fleet of 44 sloops. The first day of racing started slow. There was a fleeting Southerly breeze causing a postponement to start the regatta. After a race was abandoned, the PRO Paul Clissold was able to complete two races for the day in 4-7 knots. The team adjusted to the current and different boat and prepared for the next day.
Sunday’s wind was much more favorable for racing. Race Committee had moved up the start time an hour in order to take full advantage of the strong Westerly wind and make up for lost time due to Saturday’s lack of wind. Four more races were sailed on Sunday. The competition was fierce and the Wolverines learned a lot. This was a great opportunity for Michigan sailors to compete against some of the best keelboat teams in the nation!

SUMMARY
The Wolverines traveled to Michigan State University to compete at Cedarfest. On Saturday, the team faced puffy 7-11 knot winds. The team worked hard to pay attention to the wind and connect the puffs. Race Committee completed 4 races in each division before a storm came in and racing was cancelled for the day. Consistency proved to be key as the team’s nearly all top 3 finishes placed the team in 1st overall going into Sunday. Sunday’s wind was much stronger and shiftier. Race Committee only got off one set before the wind was deemed too extreme for racing. Overall, B fleet won their division and the team placed 2nd overall!
A Michigan team was also sent to the University of Notre Dame to compete at the Shamrock Scramble. The regatta started on Saturday in 8-10 knot breeze. Throughout the day, the breeze picked up along with some rain. By the end of the day Race Committee completed 6 races in A division and 5 races in B division. The team did well in the wind and had almost all top 5 finishes! Day 2 began with a strong Westerly wind, but it quickly started dying. The regatta ended with a total of 10 races in each division. The Wolverines placed 4th overall!
